In my new book with Dr. Katie Novak, UDL and Blended Learning , I share a story about working with an architect to design a new home after my family lost our house in the Tubbs Fire in 2017. I like to compare the teacher’s work designing learning experiences to the work of an architect. Summer Learning Opportunities.
Loui Lord Nelson on Episode 458 of the 10-Minute Teacher Podcast Universal Design for Learning (UDL) doesn’t have to be mind-boggling. Today’s guest is international UDL expert Loui Lord Nelson, Ph.D. She talks about what we need to know and also the common mistakes educators make when starting to use UDL.
I teamed up with Dr. Katie Novak to write a follow-up to our book UDL and Blended Learning. In our second book, UDL and Blended Learning 2: Shifting to Sustainable Student-led Workflows (coming out in spring 2022), we tackle 10 unsustainable teacher-led workflows. The goal of these workshops is twofold.
I had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop on design thinking for educators at the New Mexico Association for the Gifted Fall Institute. I then had the participating educators familiarize themselves with Squishy Circuits to prepare them for the upcoming design challenge and to deepen their engagement with the workshop content.
Despite my familiarity with all of the ISTE Standards, I have found that I am thinking much more deeply about the ISTE Standards for Educators as I go through this process with my cohort (which I appreciate)… One of our activities asked us to reflect on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines.
At a recent workshop, a teacher posed a compelling question about the effectiveness of small-group versus whole-group instruction. This inquiry always prompts me to reflect: How many educators gather pre-assessment data before crafting their lesson plans?

When I facilitate workshops on this model, I describe it as a sequence of learning activities designed to move students toward a specific learning goal or objective. The playlist, or individual rotation model, is a blended learning model that strives to give students more control over the pace and path of their learning.
When I facilitate blended learning workshops, teachers will make comments like, “This is great, but it seems like a lot of work.” Even though a teacher’s design work is cognitively engaging and critical to creating student-centered learning environments, it takes time and energy.
When I facilitate blended learning workshops, I ask participants to think about these three roles and identify the role they spend the most time and energy in. Teachers have three primary roles – designer, instructor, and facilitator. The responses always yield the same results.
As someone who regularly works with teachers on topics like blended learning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and student-led learning, one recurring theme I encounter is control. This begs the question: Why don’t we trust our students?
As we look to the how of this seemingly daunting task, we should consider the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, which provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials and assessments. . UDL Framework from CAST. UDL can help meet the needs of the widest range of student variability.
I think there was an IT workshop every single day for two weeks helping us make our core courses synchronous or asynchronous so that our students can access them. So we need to try to follow those UDL guidelines to ensure that our course materials are accessible for all, for all learners.
I remember facilitating workshops on blended learning models and universally designed learning to provide students with flexible pathways. We teach beautifully diverse groups of students with various skill levels, needs, language proficiencies, and learning preferences.
Project-Based Learning (PBL) : In a PBL environment, must-do stations could be essential steps in the project process, such as research or prototype development, while may-do stations offer optional skills workshops or resources for deepening project work, like using organizational project management tools or conducting interviews.
The Universal Design Learning (UDL) framework is one of the approaches using scientific insights to help classrooms adapt to meet different learning styles. The workshopUDL: Designing for Learner Variability aims to help participants learn the basics and enrich their lesson designs to help all students.
