In my new book with Dr. Katie Novak, UDL and Blended Learning , I share a story about working with an architect to design a new home after my family lost our house in the Tubbs Fire in 2017. Too often, teachers rely exclusively on the teacher-led, whole group model because that is what they were taught in teacher training programs.
Loui Lord Nelson on Episode 458 of the 10-Minute Teacher Podcast Universal Design for Learning (UDL) doesn’t have to be mind-boggling. Today’s guest is international UDL expert Loui Lord Nelson, Ph.D. She talks about what we need to know and also the common mistakes educators make when starting to use UDL.
Today, we offer one more: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) What is UDL Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences that can accommodate individual learning differences. UDL at its core is simply good teaching.
As I facilitated these sessions, I became increasingly excited about the potential of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), blended learning, and social-emotional learning (SEL) to foster deeper learning outcomes. UDL, blended learning, and SEL can be harnessed together to create rich and meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
In our book UDL and Blended Learning , Dr. Katie Novak and I encourage teachers to work toward firm, often standards-aligned, goals. I share the template below with teachers to use in training sessions. We also stress the importance of providing students with flexible means. Step 2: Use a simple 4-point mastery-based scale.
I host a podcast called The Balance and wrote a book titled Balance with Blended Learning because I see teachers struggling with balance in every coaching and training session I facilitate. As Katie Novak and I write in UDL and Blended Learning: Thriving in Flexible Learning Landscapes (coming out May 29!),
In training sessions, I ask teachers to think about why they use this model. You can learn more about universally designing blended learning to give students more agency in my book UDL and Blended Learning or by taking my online, self-paced courses. Looking for additional resources?
Some schools are also beginning to employ AI tools for administrative productivity, which will require training and guidance to ensure educators and staff can successfully integrate these tools into their work. In 2025, UDL will be at the center of creating comfortable and engaging learning environments that accommodate all students needs.
They have a huge catalog of K-12 education training classes that are offered online, on open schedules, and at affordable rates. Model Teaching is an online educator training program with a goal not only to provide teaching knowledge but to improve overall student performance. What is Model Teaching? Elementary Math. Writing Prompts.
Additional hashtags include #EduSkyAI, #iTeachMath, #EduCoach, #TLSky, #EdTech, #AIinEducation, and #UDL. The company says it will not sell user data and will not use user data to train AI systems (but since Bluesky is so open, it’s possible for others to use your data). The main education hashtag is #EduSky.
Inclusive educators often use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to provide students with consistent access to engaging content and effective paths for achieving educational goals in classrooms where they experience a greater sense of belonging. The first principle of UDL invites teachers to use “multiple means of representation.”.

Professional learning should not be relegated to a handful of all-staff training days. Check out my newest book UDL and Blended Learning: Thriving in Flexible Learning Landscapes ! Looking for a summer read?
The transition from face-to-face to online teaching was abrupt and came with many challenges: not enough devices, faulty or missing internet connection, insufficient training, the need for interaction, and home and school/work-life balance, doubled by a desire to maintain a sense of normality in a completely new scenario.
The UDL framework can help teachers shape inclusive learning environments and can support K-12 leaders in implementing new programs. UDL is not another program that teachers have to shoehorn into their already-crammed day–rather, it is a process and framework to help educators ensure they are reaching all learners.
So, we incorporated principles like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure cultural relevancy and inclusivity, created project prompts around climate change and mental well-being and designed professional learning and curriculum supports to emphasize our district’s priorities.
When I facilitate training sessions on playlists, I use a backward design approach to guide teachers through the process (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). These conversations function to strengthen teacher-student relationships and make the process of personalizing a playlist more sustainable.
So we need to try to follow those UDL guidelines to ensure that our course materials are accessible for all, for all learners. So if you're not familiar with UDL, universal design for learning, it's a framework that was developed back in the ’90s by a group of neuroscientists, and they discovered that each person learns in a unique way.
Universal Design Learning (UDL) is a way of teaching that fits with e-learning to gain new perspectives and engage in group problem-solving. But why is this pairing of e-learning and UDL so important? What is UDL? What does UDL through e-learning look like? The impact of this approach, grounded in UDL, is significant.
It doesn't have information that is false or there's unconscious or implicit biases either from our own input, from what we're asking, or from the datasets that the AI is trained on. But the differentiation of instruction, the ability to use, you know, UDL in what we do and reach all learners, I think that's the game changer.
This is why it is vital to employ professionals who are trained to help create the environments these children need. Common misconceptions and a lack of awareness about neurodiversity can significantly hinder neurodiverse children in the classroom. In turn, this can create unwanted barriers to their learning, success and overall well-being.
PowerUp WHAT WORKS ( www.powerupwhatworks.org ) provides customizable materials, lesson plans, instructional strategies, videos and more to enhance learning for students with diverse needs, and to personalize learning with technology and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
This requires some training for educators on how to create more inclusive classrooms. Professional development To enhance educators’ capacity to support diverse learners and inclusive classrooms, they need ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
Option 1 Science: Design a new experiment to test a scientific hypothesis Science: Write a research paper on an environmental issue Math: Solve a set of problems and explain your solutions in a video tutorial Math: Develop a math game that helps others learn about a mathematical concept or process English : Write an essay analyzing the symbolism in (..)
AI systems must be created by diverse people and trained on diverse datasets to avoid inaccuracies and ensure true representation, particularly for students with disabilities. By leveraging AI technologies within UDL’s flexible framework, educators can better support diverse learners and remove barriers to learning.
Summarized transcript transcribers are often trained in text-condensing strategies. Real-time captioning: When and why Real-time captioning is performed by professionally trained captioners, automated speech recognition (ASR), or a combination of the two.
Some educators who want to make online learning more engaging and accessible are exploring the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. The beauty of UDL is that it addresses ‘learner variability’, which is the norm in our classrooms.”. A key premise of UDL is that there is no “average learner.” Online Class Design.
This has thrust an unprecedented number of teachers into a format for which they may have little or no training. Tom Tobin is the first person who taught me about this, but it's a UDL principle, and that's “plus one.” So EdSurge asked our teaching advice columnist, Bonni Stachowiak, to offer a quick primer. Do a plus one.
It takes a few weeks to get kids trained, but then the rest of the year will go smoothly! . Kim incorporates best practices including WICOR, UDL, ELL. A recent article in the EDUCAUSE Review describes how University of Memphis integrated Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles into their online course development process. Making course content accessible may at first seem a daunting task when faced with a lengthy list of rules or standards.
I get asked A LOT in trainings about AI detection tools and I am glad that we’re following the lead of universities in not recommending its use in the classroom. Within the time frame of one full day of training, I can get teachers to think about assessing prompts over products. are my two favorites.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): UDL, rooted in cognitive neuroscience, emphasizes providing diverse learners with multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression. Teacher training and support: Many educators may not have received adequate training in integrating digital tools into their teaching methods.
In training sessions with math teachers shifting to the station rotation model, I provide the resource below to get them thinking about all the different ways they can use their stations. In the video below, I respond to a math teacher’s question about how to design math lessons for her 80-minute block period.
I spend September to December “training” students to use the EduProtocols. Kim incorporates best practices including WICOR, UDL, ELL. With all of the EduProtocols, I find the versatility of input, interaction, and output key to keeping me informed about my students and their progress in learning. Here is the Wakelet of EduProtocols!
