This will be easier to do if school leaders harness the talent on their campuses and create systems that encourage teachers to learn with and from each other. Professionallearning should not be relegated to a handful of all-staff training days. The members of the PLC determine the focus of their inquiry and learning.
Schools will work to improve these matters, while maintaining aspects of the job teachers value most, including school culture, opportunities for professionallearning and certifications, and STEM and arts programs. Teachers want solutions for student behavioral issues, more attentive leadership teams, and more manageable workloads.
Imagine if we designed learning experiences for these students. For me, this means embedding Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into my learning experiences and asking questions while I am designing: Is this accessible? Do my learners have choices in each stage of the learning process?
Professionallearning communities (PLCs) offer a collaborative approach to professional development in which small groups of educators meet regularly to reflect on instructional planning and practice, share expertise and insights from their teaching experiences, and engage in collective problem-solving.
