In my District I am part of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) with other administrators. The focus of our PLC is the Classroom Walkthrough practice as a tool to improve student achievement. Defining what constitutes student engagement can be extremely tricky and quite arbitrary at best.

Others paid attention to the data and rising number of coronavirus cases and used their summers more wisely to design for better remote/hybrid learning and teaching than the mostly-low-level direct instruction, digital worksheets, and paper homework packets that we saw last spring. As an advocate of blended learning, I want teachers to strive for a healthy balance of online and offline tasks as students engage in distance learning.

I have a new 4 Shifts Video Series. The series consists of 7 self-paced modules and includes 38 videos, 7 lesson redesign opportunities, 6 additional instructional redesign scenarios, and other suggestions, strategies, and resources. The vast majority of individual videos and activities are 7 minutes or less. hours total.

Even in schools outside of the Verizon Innovative Learning network, coaches reported that they were valued more by teachers and administrators than prior to the pandemic. Now, with video conferencing tools, coaches are able to “visit” more classrooms on a given day.

Let’s look at these Pillars and ways that we can lead in the now: Student engagement, learning, and outcomes : We cannot expect to see increases in achievement if students are not learning. Students who are not engaged are not likely to be learning. Engagement is not a silver bullet, though.
