In my District I am part of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) with other administrators. The focus of our PLC is the Classroom Walkthrough practice as a tool to improve student achievement. Defining what constitutes student engagement can be extremely tricky and quite arbitrary at best.

Creativity helps develop a deeper sense of learning, yet we keep our “creative” units until after state testing is over. Recently, I met with two education leaders to discuss how to improve teacher and student engagement through creativity. Just as the learning has to be meaningful to students, it must also be for adults.

Engagement was amplified with a focus on the how, exemplars from all types of schools, and the use of digital tools to provide everyone with an opportunity to respond. In essence, my role is now more of a facilitator of learning. Leverage digital tools for voice and choice.

Well, at this time, they were the shiny new tool on the block and quite expensive. It should be noted that in both examples above, direct instruction was followed by some sort of student-centered learning activity. In many cases, every classroom is outfitted, as well as conference rooms and professional learning spaces.

Let’s look at these Pillars and ways that we can lead in the now: Student engagement, learning, and outcomes : We cannot expect to see increases in achievement if students are not learning. Students who are not engaged are not likely to be learning. Engagement is not a silver bullet, though.
