Quite simply, socialmedia tools such as Twitter and Facebook have improved my effectiveness and efficiency as an educational leader. As I learned from my students, many more people use the socialmedia tool, Facebook, than use Twitter. Principals and schools should embrace Twitter, and socialmedia in general.
We learned a great deal after the student presentations this past February, and were pleasantly surprised by how seriously many of the students took this learning opportunity. MIT OCW discovered our project through socialmedia channels and they eventually did a case study on IOCS.
I have read some very thought-provoking posts and associated commentary over the past couple of weeks focusing on how particular educators use socialmedia. Up until this point I really didn’t have a clue as to what it was all about except that it was a socialmedia tool that functioned like an electronic bulletin board. As I began to piece together resources on PersonalLearning Networks(PLN’s) , I lost track of time and ended staying up well past my bedtime.
I have also been blessed to observe great examples that members of my PersonalLearning Network (PLN) make available on socialmedia. On the contrary, I have seen this firsthand from some fantastic educators whose schools I have been blessed to work with on a long-term basis in the role of job-embedded coach.
First and foremost, make the time to learn, grown, and get better as opposed to finding the time. Socialmedia allows us to connect, to learn, to grow and to reflect not only within ourselves but with each other. It’s about always being in pursuit of that selfish goal of improving our learning so we can improve learning for kids. Our personallearning networks are all different.
You can either lurk and learn or develop your own PersonalLearning Network (PLN) to farm the best ideas and strategies that are actually working in similar demographics. When using socialmedia, think about the platforms being used and mix it up by mashing together text, hyperlinks, images, and video.
Classmates will become the core of your ongoing PersonalLearning Network. You will actively collaborate, share knowledge, provide constructive feedback to classmates, publish digitally, and differentiate for unique needs.
