There is nothing more important to an educator, outside of working with kids, than professional learning. If you are the brightest and most innovative person in the room, you are in the wrong room! Develop or enhance your PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN) to connect with experts, peers, and practitioners across the globe to grow professionally through knowledge acquisition, resource sharing, engaged discussion, and to receive feedback.
Our children need to have adults in their lives that know and understand the art of developing personallearningnetworks and connecting with others. In other words, they need adults who are “network literate.” But what does being “network literate” look like as it relates to personallearningnetworks?
You can either lurk and learn or develop your own PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN) to farm the best ideas and strategies that are actually working in similar demographics. Work with teachers and other support staff to develop a responsible and equitable policy.
I cannot begin to explain all of the battles with students and parents that my administrative team and I had to deal with because of the established policy. This shift in mindset can be directly attributed to what I have learned from innovative educators in the social media spaces that I now delve into on a routine basis.
Scaling personalizedlearning across a state might sound like an oxymoron, but officials from Rhode Island’s Office of Innovation are taking on the task. The ultimate goal is to craft a clear vision and methodology for instituting personalizedlearning throughout a state.
With lesson planning, assessments, and lining up everything with school and federal standards and policies, all while juggling virtual and face-to-face classes, you know that teachers are busy. Some swear by their PLNs (PersonalLearningNetworks) or CoPs (Communities of Practice).
The content they shared included policies, procedures, pedagogical techniques, and professional development, but more importantly, tangible improvement results. Motivated and inspired I then began to seek out research and more examples of successful implementation that aligned with our goals while addressing specific challenges.
Social media had to be blocked for all and I, for one, wasn’t going to waste any of my precious time using it professionally or personally. Learning spaces had to conform to the perceived rule of law in education. An ironclad Internet filter was in place to “protect” students and ensure that none of them could go off task.
AUP – Acceptable Use Policy. BLearning – Blended Learning (using a range of multimedia and strategies). BYOL – Bring Your Own Learning. PBL – Project Based Learning ( click here for my guide ). PLN – PersonalLearningNetwork. RED – Rapid e-learning Development. BYOD – Bring Your Own Device.

I continue to believe that we cannot expect educators to teach "21st Century Skills" if they aren''t experiencing the benefits of these technologies personally, and that the surest way to improving education is to help educators become "lead learners" and in a position to influence their students and public policy.
