Like many, this teacher felt intense pressure to teach the standards and wasn’t sure how to embrace Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and blended learning. Just like the transfer of information can create barriers, so can our strategies for measuring learning and assessing understanding. This is not unusual.
I like to compare the teacher’s work designing learning experiences to the work of an architect. Katie Novak and I wrote UDL and Blended Learning: Thriving in Flexible Learning Landscapes to support teachers in developing a mindset, skill set, and toolset nimble enough to traverse any teaching and learning landscape with confidence. There is no endpoint when it comes to learning, which should be exciting!
Second, technology is here to stay. So, how do we design and facilitate learning experiences to remove barriers and allow all students to succeed? How can we leverage technology to provide meaningful choices within a learning experience and create the time and space needed to work with individual students or small groups of learners?
In my last blog, I focused on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principle of representation. I described how blended and onlinelearning can help educators provide opportunities for students to perceived and engage with information presented in multiple modalities. 4 – UDL – Universal Design for Learning Inaccessibility is still a major downfall of some onlinelearning implementations. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ensures that lessons are accessible for every student. UDL is an excellent framework that can be used in any classroom.
That means they need to be able to flex their metacognitive muscles by setting goals, tracking and monitoring their progress, reflecting on their learning, and assessing their own work. This, after all, is the concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework that aids curriculum designers and educators in ensuring that all learners receive the accommodations that are needed to help them excel in school. UDL was an offshoot of a movement that promoted universal design in architecture and product development.
This blend of online and offline learning can happen exclusively in the classroom with the station rotation and whole group rotation models. It can combine both in-class and onlinelearning at home with the flipped classroom and playlist models. Looking for additional resources?

Thousands of teachers every year take education classes to renew their license, move up to the next salary range at their school (I did that–often), or learn teaching skills they didn’t get in their degree program (like remote teaching or in-depth technology). It is a series of stations, or learning activities, that students rotate through. Typically, there is a teacher-led station, an online station, and an offline station. To be considered a blended learning model, at least one station must be an onlinelearning station. Learning is, in part, a social endeavor.
