Digital Promise first launched our Micro-credential Policy Map in January 2020 to share valuable information on how states and districts across the U.S. The new filters include: District-Level Incentives : Individual schools and/or districts have policies recognizing micro-credentials earned by educators.
In the seven years since colleges and companies first started experimenting with large-scale online courses known as MOOCs, more than 100 million people have given them a try—though how they are used keeps changing. Two big trends dominated the MOOC landscape this year. edX – 18 million. XuetangX – 14 million.
At a recent meeting of educational technology policy advisors, a well-informed university CIO casually declared that MOOCs were history. Increasingly, MOOCs are being packaged into series of courses with a non-degree credential being offered to those who successfully complete the series.
One sign of that: There’s a 22-story tower in the country’s capital officially named the “MOOC Times Building” that houses a government-supported incubator for edtech companies. But MOOCs were trending upward back in 2014 when the education incubator was established, so it made a catchy name for the building.
I took one of the very first MOOCs, and back then the videos, assignments, and certificates were all free. As MOOC providers focussed on finding a business model, they started putting certain aspects of the experience behind a paywall, hoping to get more people to pay. That was in 2011.
The MOOC landscape has grown to include 9,400 courses, more than 500 MOOC-based credentials, and more than a dozen graduate degrees. The total number of MOOCs available to register for at any point of time is larger than ever, thanks to tweaks in the scheduling policy by MOOC providers. edX: 14 million users.
And that’s forcing companies and colleges around the globe to reevaluate their data policies and practices. MOOC-provider Coursera, for example, claims to have 6.5 Across all geographies, Europe has one of the highest concentration of MOOC users in the world. million in Europe.
