Fortunately for me I have already begun to work with my staff and students to transform the teaching and learning culture at New Milford HS as it pertains to cell phones as mobilelearning devices. By the end of last school year many more teachers were incorporating mobilelearning devices into their instruction.
As a result I chastised my friends and made sure that the environment at my school was not only free of this stupid entity, but also other forms of distracting technologies that would interfere with student learning. This is how I saw social media and mobiletechnology back in 2009. Here is what I now know and believe.
A year ago, I created a technology course on Moodle for Spanish teachers as part of the Ministry of Education of Spain. It has been quite the ride since I changed my perspective on teaching, learning, and leadership eight years ago. Prior to 2009 I basically saw technology as just an add-on and something that could spruce up a lesson. Learning spaces had to conform to the perceived rule of law in education.
Since 2009 I have been a huge believer and advocate for connected learning and the formation of PersonalLearningNetworks (PLN’s). Now don't get me wrong, I still highly value face-to-face experiences, as there are some natural limits to learning exclusively in a social media vacuum.
Can technology help us to think more clearly? The tools I use are a kind of mind technology, a means of extending my cognitive capabilities, enhancing my thinking, memory and recall. Some might say that I am over-reliant upon technology. They are numerous, and I know many of them personally. We would be poorer without it.

On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in October, approximately 400 passionate educators congregated at New Milford High School for the Tri-State Educational Technology Conference (TSETC). I had met George Bengel at the NYSCATE Leadership Symposium this summer and personally reached out to him about presenting at TSETC.
