At its core, personalizedlearning is about recognizing that no two students learn exactly the same way. It moves beyond the one-size-fits-all approach by focusing on each student’s strengths, needs and learning pace. In April 2019, we began our journey to personalizelearning.
Lyn Hilt (@l_hilt), Nick Provenzano (@thenerdyteacher), Lisa Dabbs (@teachingwthsoul) and Patrick Larkin (@patrickmlarkin) joined the conversation and shared a wealth of advice on how educators can develop a strong personallearning network. What is a personallearning network?
We can look to the past in order to inform current practice. If efficacy is the goal, it is critical to embrace a scholarly mindset to inform and influence our work, not drive it. Professionallearning It is hard to meet goals and expectations to improve learning if consistent support is absent.
Asynchronous PersonalizedLearning The critical tenet of personalizedlearning is all learners getting what they need when and where they need it. There needs to be a shift from “PD” to professionallearning that is ongoing, job-embedded, and research-aligned.
Technology has the potential to transform teaching and learning in a number of ways. One way it can be used to transform teaching and learning is by providing students with access to a wealth of information, including multimedia resources, educational apps, and online databases.
It represents a dramatic shift from how schools have been run and structured for over a century, as what started as a personal use of technology has become systemic to every facet of leadership. Many kids have flourished during remote learning as they have been able to follow a unique path or learn at their own pace.
Thus, educators need not only a vision for how to personalizelearning effectively but also essential supports that will help to ensure success. The most crucial aspect when it comes to personalizinglearning is the teacher in the classroom.
First and foremost, make the time to learn, grown, and get better as opposed to finding the time. There is nothing more important to an educator, outside of working with kids, than professionallearning. Through social media a PersonalLearning Network (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse.
This awareness allows us to identify our strengths, recognize the gaps, and make informed decisions about the steps we need to take. In both personal growth and organizational development, clarity about our starting point empowers us to set realistic goals, measure progress, and ultimately reach where we want and need to be.
Secondly, develop an informal walk-through schedule with your leadership team, mandating at least five walks per day for each member, and track visits and improvement comments on a color-coded Google Doc. Developing and implementing professionallearning is also an effective way to lead by example and build better relationships with staff.
The fact remains that there was no professionallearning to prepare for the reality that everyone is facing nor a plan for something like COVID19.
