I kicked things off with a survey of major technological developments in a very top level way, then dived into specific, currently used digital tools (the LMS, ePortfolios, video, robotics, big data, social media, 3d printing, etc.). Several participants pointed out limitations on faculty time which block creation and even adoption of OER.
Some examples include augmented reality, virtual reality, open education resources (OER), adaptive tools, coding, drones/robotics, and gamification. With all the excitement and possibilities it is important to remember that pedagogy trumps technology if the goal is meaningful student learning.
I was also surprised to see so little development in gaming and gamification within education this past year. Looking ahead to 2018, here are three predictions: First, we will probably see more work on the many ways automation (AI, robotics, etc.) We shouldn’t be surprised to see educational technology become increasingly political.
