It was one of the first models, along with the flippedclassroom, that I could employ in my low-tech classroom. I wanted students to collaborate, communicate, and create at that online station using the devices as a tool. They conducted research, investigated topics, and accessed online texts, resources, and tools.
I think that it’s important to remember that the value of digital reading is in the Accessibility Features, meaning the tools that allow students greater access to the content and the learning experience. These tools do not replace the need to read, but add functionality to the process. FlippedClassroom.
For example, SmartPhones are a powerful communication tool, but it can also make communication impersonal. Social media has connected friends and family across the globe, but it has quickly become a tool for bullying and narcissism. Mediums also have the ability to shape our learning experiences, memories, and comprehension.
Due to age and lack of life experience and skills, available tools are different and the need for adult support is slightly greater. For teachers, creating and supervising extracurricular learning can be a source of inspiration and serve as a sandbox for new approaches to teaching (I’m looking at you, flippedclassroom and UDL!).
