But it nonetheless embodies what Dale Dougherty, the “father” of the movement, sees as literally the “moral imperative” of the makermovement: “to use our creative freedom to make the future better, to be hands-on in making change, and to get everyone participating fully in that future.”.
Vicki: Today we’re talking with Micah Brown @mbrownedtech , an Instructional Technology Specialist in Kansas. OK, so let’s say that I’m a teacher and I’m not super comfortable with technology. That’s what makes a great educational change and transformative teaching, as well as we learn how to use technology in a nonthreatening way.
It’s hard to measure, but leaders at the forefront of the 21st century learning movement tell me they still see too many students sitting passively while teachers deliver instruction; too much technology is still used to replace routine tasks rather than turbo-charge the experience of learning.
While I am sure you already realize technology itself is nothing new. In fact, at one point, a tractor, train, light bulb, and even a pencil were radical technology. I must confess, I myself am really into the whole makermovement. Like computer science labs, I am not a huge fan of maker labs either.

I had the opportunity to attend the Future of Educational Technology Conference (FETC) in Orlando Florida this past week. FETC is one of the largest EdTech conferences in the country with over 10,000 attendees from around the world. FETC is a HUGE conference with lots of big names and big ideas.

Two years ago I attended an edtech conference focused on the then up-and-coming trend of makerspaces. Fast-forward to a few years from now, and imagine a conference similar to the one I attended, with the same keynote speaker addressing an audience of passionate maker-educators.
This leads to the “innovator’s dilemma,” described recently in The Economist as “the difficult choice an established company faces when it has to choose between holding onto an existing market by doing the same thing a bit better, or capturing new markets by embracing new technologies and adopting new business models.”
The survey, " Parent's Attitudes Towards Educational Technology " was conducted by Lieberman Research Worldwide on behalf of MarketPlace, which has been studying the impact of technology in education for the past year. 98% of parents say their students use technology for school work. Data privacy is still a major concern.
Building poems, art, music, mathematical solutions and so on are all part of the ‘makermovement’ in my mind. I submitted a proposal for the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) convention. My favorite quote from his post is: “What problems are we hiring edtech to solve?” It was rejected.
On top of that, there is promise for continued education outside of the classroom; just look at Google’s recent $1B pledge over the next five years to help train Americans for jobs in technology. schools will give way to an increased focus on STEM and coding in schools, reinvigorating the “makermovement.”
