It is no secret how we retain information, construct new knowledge, and develop competencies critical for success in the world of work and, more importantly, life. Learning is shaped by specific conditions that are either created or engaged in by chance that allow for authentic application through an immersive experience. If there were a secret sauce, then that is it, but it's not as mysterious as one might think.

As millions more Americans are vaccinated against COVID-19 every day, many are now wondering what society will look like in a post-COVID world. While the virus may stay with us in some form, many things will go back to normal. However, it’s less certain which of the adaptations we’ve collectively made over the previous year will fade along with the virus, and which might represent a “new normal” that we’ll take with us into the future.

Having taught the majority of the school year in a hybrid environment, it took time to adjust to teaching online and deciding which methods or tools to use. Beyond the adjustments related to instruction, it was challenging to get into a workflow and figure out how to best provide for students at home and in the classroom space. My recommendation for anyone who has not experienced hybrid learning is to develop a routine that helps you minimize the loss of instructional time that happens due to ba

Over the past few months, the topic of learning loss has been discussed with increased frequency and, in some circles, urgency. For many educators, the phrase strikes a nerve, and it’s easy to see why. The term learning loss implies that teachers stopped teaching, when in fact teachers have been working harder than ever. While the pandemic presented many challenges for K–12 education over the past year, education never stopped.

In a world of remote learning and social distancing, tactile sensations are sorely missing — but perhaps not for much longer. At Northwestern University, researchers have created an epidermal virtual reality device that mimics the sensation of human touch. Featuring an array of tiny, vibrating, individually programmable components called actuators, the device adheres to the user’s skin like a Band-Aid using a silicon polymer material.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to shutter and educators and students rapidly shifted to distance learning, those in Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program had the advantage of already knowing how to use devices and apps for learning. In fact, more than 70 percent of teachers in the program reported feeling prepared, with 93 percent crediting the program with making aspects of remote instruction easier to implement, according to a December 2020 survey.

Email spam has long been a security scourge for IT managers. It’s not just because of the wasted time and resources, but also the potential for threats, such as phishing messages, to come riding in along with unwanted advertisements. Phishing messages are intended to deceive users into clicking on a web page that either tricks the user into entering their credentials or downloads malware to their workstation — or both.

By Betsy Hill and Roger Stark Teachers and students have known since the time of Socrates that learners are different from each other, with different perspectives and aptitudes. These days, it may seem as if there is more variability in classrooms than ever when it comes to what students know and can do. However, it is also important to remember that intra-learner variability can be just as great and just as perplexing as inter-learner variability, especially for the learners involved.

So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

There are plenty of digital gadgets that can make users feel as though they’re being transported through time and space. But the sensation of being immersed in another era or a different realm is much older than today’s VR headsets. The origins of the experience may come from an ancient artform: theater. “As a set designer, I would think about experiences that are recreating augmented reality, essentially,” says Brave Williams, an associate professor at Husson University in Maine.
