As educators around the world are realizing, there are many benefits to using AI to plan and deliver online lessons. This transformative technology has the potential to drastically streamline teachers workloads, while also making learning experiences more engaging, personalized and accessible for students. Business leaders in all different industries are already integrating the technology into their working practices.
A few weeks back, my friend Monica Burns reached out and asked to share some insight on my favorite artificial intelligence (AI) tool for a blog post she was writing. Since she was gathering perspectives from numerous educators, I wanted to avoid the well-known tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Thus, my decision was easy as I was able to zero in on one that I use routinely, which not only helps me when coaching, but also can be invaluable to practicing school leaders.
Ruben Puentedura developed the SAMR model in 2010 to help schools integrate technology into teaching and learning. SAMR stands for the four tiers in this education model: substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition. In schools that have implemented the SAMR model in their classrooms, teachers use technology as a way to enhance learning rather as a replacement for instruction.
Schools face significant cyber challenges. In K12, IT teams may be under-resourced, with limited budgets and personnel. Meanwhile, the shift to digital learning has expanded the attack surface, and most end users are kids, who may not be well versed in cybersecurity best practices. In this environment, endpoint detection and response is a crucial defense, providing real-time monitoring of devices and networks.
Generative AI holds tremendous promise for all stakeholders in higher education. But guardrails are needed. Strong governance that empower instructors are at the core of a responsible approach to using generative AI in academia.
Despite challenges such as increasing workloads, burnout and staff shortages, schools have new opportunities to innovate. According to a Gallup poll, 44% of K12 workers reported being always or very often burned out at work. Earlier this year, the U.N. issued a global alert regarding a teacher shortage, and 44 million more primary and secondary teachers will be needed worldwide by 2030, according to UNESCO.
