'Social Media is a funny beast. Sometimes it can be your best friend. Like finding that long lost high school BFF on Facebook or coming across that link that fits right into your lesson in the morning. But sometimes it can be your worst enemy. Like it was for me recently. I was misquoted, backhandedly called a racist and, in not so many words told that I might be the most unintelligent teacher around.
'Google calendar is a great tool. My wife and I have been using it for over a year to keep track of our family activities. A new feature currently in calendar labs adds the ability to attach a Google Doc to a calendar event. This makes using Google Calendar for lesson planning a powerful tool. After create a lesson or unit, you can share your calendar and relevant documents with other teachers in your building or district, fostering collaboration.
Recently a lot of emphasis has been placed on sustainability. Sustainable this, sustainable that. Here at the University of Plymouth we actually have a CETL - a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning - dedicated to Sustainable Futures. We have also seen a movement toward ' reusable learning objects ' (Erm, I have to confess that this has confused the hell out of me.

'I''m spending my winter break this week in Orlando, Florida with my wife, daughter, and in-laws. We visited the Magic Kingdom yesterday and Downtown Disney tonight. Throughout our visit I vacillated between disgust and amazement at the Disney empire. The expense, extravagance and commercialism can be overwhelming. Upon further reflection, however, you have to be impressed and amazed at the vision created by Walt Disney which infuses every aspect of Disney World.

'I once taught a kid that I knew was going to grow up and do great things. From the moment I met him there was just something about him that made him stand out from all the other kids that year. He would never settle for just average. He always had to be the best at everything. Whenever one of his teachers would assign a project he always had to go above and beyond what the other kids did.

'I dunno about you, but more and more I find my data being housed somewhere else, mainly " the cloud." Meaning that my calendar, documents email, photos and more are not stored locally on my machine, they are stored on some other computer in some far oft land. And that can pose a problem. While these services normally have great reliability and uptime things happen and we can loose access to our data, or, even worse, loose the data all together.

'Please tell me that I am wrong in the way I think. Let me give some background. I am taking classes to be an administrator. This week during one of my classes the discussion centered around accountability, mainly should test scores be used in evaluating teachers. Timely, considering the #edchat topic this week. In North Carolina, teachers here get a report that tells them how effective they are as a teacher, based solely on test scores.
'Besides Race To The Top and NCBL the hottest topic in education has to be teacher evaluations. From how often a career teacher should be evaluated to if those evaluations should be based on student accountability and test scores, it seems as if there is a story everyday of some district somewhere that is embroiled in an evaluation mess. Last night on #edchat, participants tried to tackle the tough questions surrounding teacher evaluations.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
'I am concerned. I am concerned for our profession. I am concerned for our parents. Most of all, I am concerned for our kids. I had a long talk the other day with a very good friend of mine. She is a teacher. A very good teacher. She told me that this might be her last year of teaching. Keep in mind she has only been in the classroom for 6 years but more and more she is feeling the burnout.
