At Edcamp: Maker Learning , educators from all over the country joined us to discuss the most pressing topics related to designing hands-on learning opportunities. In this post, we share how the learnings from these events have informed our approach to a new professional learning opportunity, the Maker Learning @ Home Cohort. .
Educators now have to attend mandate-driven workshops on the Common Core, teacher/principal evaluation, and student growth objectives. The trainings that many educators are now forced to attend are usually driven by whatever the federal and state governments have mandated. The key word here is forced.
Edcamps are free, public, professional development opportunities organized by educators, for educators. Edcamps are “un-conferences,” unstructured conferences that leverage the knowledge and experiences of the attendees to drive topics and discussions. All Edcamps can receive materials to facilitate a making activity at their event.
For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. A dynamic mash-up of workshops and coaching definitely falls into the sweet spot.

Now a veteran of 7 Edcamps, I will say again that I learn more at these events than I do from traditional PD!
But these conferences are not like an edcamp or an unstructured unconference of the kind you may have heard of. This one focuses on getting educators to define some of their biggest challenges and then work together to figure out solutions in a workshop format that draws heavily from the world of design thinking.

Supervision conversations must move from “I attended …” to “I learned and then implemented …” Non-traditional forms of professional learning such as EdCamps, Twitter Chats, and the utilization of tools such as Voxer to connect and communicate are valuable experiences for educators. No longer should “that doesn’t count” be heard.
