In June, the Edcamp Community joined our Digital Promise family. The Edcamp Community supports educators to organize and participate in participant-driven professional learning designed by and for educators. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Edcamps were typically in-person and locally focused. It wasn’t an easy moment.
He’s currently teaching Digital Leadership, Python Coding and Video Production at Cavallini Middle School in Upper Saddle River, NJ. Mr. Reicher is an avid learner who enjoys going to Edcamps and conferences. His passion is to learn, share, teach and repeat.

For those who don''t know, Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees. I highly recommend Edcamps!

The traditional forms of sit-and-get PD are giving way to MOOCs, webinars, Edcamps and flipped learning. Traditional PD models can be flipped too, where work is done before to learn basic skills via video or through course work. So you can put in things like video, and the video can be videos taken from YouTube so the video can actually be created by somebody else. Like your videos, you have to later go into Flipsnack and put your videos in but the basic content can be created in slides and then uploaded as a pdf to Flipsnack.
The EdCamp Foundation announced the gift of a $2 million dollar, no strings attached, Bill and Melinda Gates grant. It was especially exciting for me because I was there at the birth of the powerful (now international) movement at EdCamp Philly 2010. The little video above is a blast from that past.

From that point forward, we started an adventure to create edCamp New Jersey which topped out at over 1,000 educators one year and was visited by the local cops because of the overflow of parking at the school building. On one day in August before the students came, and again in January of this year we set up Edcamp style PD days. While our PD days weren't like the traditional Edcamp style (we actually came up with the choices instead of the teachers making the choices), the teachers found the days to be useful.

Some nail it like EdCamps and EduCon , and others leave something to be desired. You can check out his videos here. The site shares what’s popular as well as all videos, Tweets, blog posts, photos, slides AND it tells you who top contributors are. I've attended a lot of conferences. You can see what mine look like here.
Students can post photos, audio, video, links, text, and and upload files to Seesaw. Interesting use of Seesaw by teacher who is facilitating: Student filled out a behavior worksheet when she was off task. Then posted a pic of it to Seesaw and did an audio reflection on it. Parents can then see what happened and discuss at home later.
