We have learned how to leverage technology to establish and maintain relationships with students and colleagues as we navigated the unknown waters of blended and distance learning. The Edcamp model of professional development is unique in that the participants drive the learning. There are no scheduled or pre-planned presentations.
This means you should approach leadership with appreciation for taking the time to consider your ideas, show them real examples of how you want to transform the meetings, and present the benefits of trying your idea. You need to also do this quite quickly in the first 5 to 10 minutes of the conversation.
The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. Between now and May, 10 local PBS affiliates will host a series of specially branded events, called PBS Edcamps, aimed at educators and caregivers of students in Pre-K through third grade.

The presenter leading did little to engage us. Even better, teachers are the ones in charge of decided what will be presented and there are some really great offerings. Often, especially in technology professional development those that do the training try to cram in every little thing into a session. Now, I love technology.

My job is to interview and survey the pioneers, investors and stakeholders who drive technological change, share their stories, and collaborate with very smart people to build and distribute tools that help everyone else get involved. Badging, micro-credentials and curation technologies are making this a reality.

Year five of Edcamp GigCity is in the books. What many people probably don't know is that this is all volunteer led and run, and Edcamp Gigcity is unique in that the organizers represent higher ed, lower ed, public, and private school sectors. I love that about our edcamp! The EdCamp philosophy makes people smile.
For larger, more efficient unconferences, the Edcamp Foundation has a site full of resources and ideas for anybody who wants to organize their own “Edcamp,” which is simply a well-articulated version of an education unconference. The Edcamp Foundation puts the Rule of Two Feet near the top of their list of tenets.

From Episodes 1-5, I had the opportunity to be introduced to Educational Technology Giants such as Angela Maiers, Eric Sheninger , Tom Whitby, and Steven Anderson. In the early part of 2012, I attended my first edCamp in Philadelphia. There are hundreds of Educational Technology Brands in this world. They all want one thing.

As mentioned in my previous post 16 Great NonProfits Working to Support EdTech in Schools , prior to my role as the Director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools, I spent 14 years in a public school in Pennsylvania as an elementary and middle school teacher, middle school and elementary principal, and district level technology director.
But these conferences are not like an edcamp or an unstructured unconference of the kind you may have heard of. Can we leverage technology to connect across state lines and learn from each other’s experiences?
A small set of educators could always create an Edcamp , a model in need of revival in our times. My first experience at SXSW EDU felt more like the typical education technology conference. But at SXSW EDU, many of the same people who attended Dr. Crenshaw’s talk about her work also attended panels on AI.
Edcamp “unconferences” have shattered the traditional model for professional development, and they’re catching on as a way for educators to share their ideas and expertise in an informal, collegial way. Now, some forward-thinking educators are adapting the Edcamp model for their students, as a way to spark richer conversations.
Here’s a partial list: rejuvenated a struggling educational leadership program at Iowa State University, including doubling our program’s enrollment, faculty, and tuition revenue; graduated 13 Ph.D.
July 12-13, 2013- Long Beach, CA: ASHA Schools Conference- Presenting two sessions, "One Digital Story at a Time: Apps to Target Narrative and Expository Language" and "''Out of the Box'': Apps through a Language Lens." Now a veteran of 7 Edcamps, I will say again that I learn more at these events than I do from traditional PD!

I have to admit, that I’ve avoided edcamps and unconfernces for a while, because they have felt to me like group hugs… warm and cozy, but not a lot about moving my learning forward. Our present education system is built around always finding the ‘right’ answer, but when can the wrong answer be valuable?
I had heard about Breakout EDU back in 2015 when it first hit the EdCamp scene in New Jersey. Read Across America Day presented the perfect time to try it a shot. I loved the idea of a team of people working together to uncover clues and solve puzzles to meet a common goal of unlocking the box to win a prize. PBJ paralysis perhaps?

Don’t be afraid to combine live and recorded presentations. Live presentations give us more human interactions and allow participants to ask questions. After the experience it allowed the lower school curriculum coordinator and myself (lower school technology coordinator) to rethink some of our professional development days. On one day in August before the students came, and again in January of this year we set up Edcamp style PD days.
