For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.

And although they’re an impressive group, representing over 250 organizations, they’re doing what you should be doing: forming a PersonalLearning Network (PLN) that benefits both themselves and the wider education community. Meetups are a great, informal way to share and learn ideas from new people face-to-face. No problem.

The most popular form of the unconference is the Edcamp , but many conferences are scheduling an “unconference” day with this same format. At Edcamps across the world, teachers show up on a Saturday morning to an unconference location.

Many schools and districts are trying to do the right thing by meeting the needs of as many educators as possible when it comes to professional learning. But the reality is most schools and districts are not equipped to personalize the professional development of every educator. Edcamps can help fill that void.

If your students are learning about Canadian geography, you can find a teacher in Toronto to provide authentic resources. Twitter is magical like that. The connections are virtually limitless.

In my workshops, I always encourage people that if the session doesn’t work for them, they are more than welcome to leave (but not in a threatening way, more in the idea of the Edcamp model of “voting with your feet”), or they can work on things that they are interested in learning.
Differing between the time when you “google” something versus asking the same question on Twitter can not only help you get better results, but in the long run, save time (which no one has enough of).
