For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.
And although they’re an impressive group, representing over 250 organizations, they’re doing what you should be doing: forming a PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN) that benefits both themselves and the wider education community. Meetups are a great, informal way to share and learn ideas from new people face-to-face.
The traditional forms of sit-and-get PD are giving way to MOOCs, webinars, Edcamps and flipped learning. One idea that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is Flipped Faculty meetings. Check out this blog post to learn more. Faculty Meetings aren’t the only thing we can flip. But what does all that mean?
Edcamps are the "unconference". They are free, attendee led and driven, places to share and learn. Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. This is a great opportunity to connect, share, teach, learn, and expand their personallearningnetwork. Follow me on Twitter and Google+.

After all is said and done, in regard to building a PersonalLearningNetwork, who one follows is much more important than who follows back. Meeting this challenge is a huge task. Teachers need the opportunity to collaborate, they need to have a sense of ownership in their learning, and they need to feel valued. Their professional learning should be personalized. One PL strategy that seems to work well are Edcamps. based on an unconference model.
To cement your bond, attend a local conference together or an Edcamp. Your Global PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN) Why? If your students are learning about Canadian geography, you can find a teacher in Toronto to provide authentic resources. Hugging when you meet face-to-face for the first time is totally normal!
They want the freedom to chart their own learning course while receiving support from the organization to do so. Quality professional development rests in the ability of the organization to not only meet their needs, but also that of its constituents. Something has to give though.
