Digital Promise is incredibly excited to welcome the Edcamp Foundation to our family of projects and programs. By fully merging our operations, we believe we can do even more to support the community of educators who organize and attend Edcamps across the United States and around the world.
As schools and districts across the country transition to distance learning, educators are seeking new ways to engage their students in powerful learning experiences at home. Educators connect and collaborate at Edcamps. We just couldn’t let go of the Edcamp, which led us to the idea of going virtual.”
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. EdcampElon was another event in a long like of teacher-driven professional development that can have a lasting impact on the learning of all who attend. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like? Edcamp appeals to educators from all walks of life.
We have learned how to leverage technology to establish and maintain relationships with students and colleagues as we navigated the unknown waters of blended and distance learning. The Edcamp model of professional development is unique in that the participants drive the learning.
Manus shares how these Edcamps supported her practice and work with other educators, and we look forward to the launch of our next Edcamp: Powerful Learning at Home session on November 21. . I attended my second Edcamp Boston Saturday, making it my 3rd official "unconference." Edcamps are really more of a movement than anything, an acknowledgment that we as educators have so much we can learn from each other! Edcamp Boston was a great experience. The presenter leading did little to engage us. At the end of the first day I went home, learned everything I could. Even better, teachers are the ones in charge of decided what will be presented and there are some really great offerings. Chattanooga, Tennessee had its 6th annual Edcamp GigCity in January. Every year, at the end of the edcamp, participants are asked to give feedback in order to qualify for the door prizes that will be given out next. Due to feedback, the edcamp changed a bit. I see the benefit of both ideas but I just wanted an Edcamp opinion.
For me, it’s been an unconferency kinda week–a celebration of the informal, participant-driven learning experiences that have made huge impact on professional learning culture. Whereas in the beginning, it felt more focused on digital learning and ed-tech, this year felt more like it was a hub for relevant education conversations. Embracing values that center empathy, compassion, and learning with courage at the center helps us all. Thus, organizers implicitly asked participants to choose their own adventure.
