For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.
For the better part of my educational career, I always referred to any type of learning to assist me as a teacher or administrator as professional development (PD). In March of 2009, I began to use Twitter, and it was at this time that I began to create a PersonalLearning Network (PLN). I was both enlightened and empowered.
It is an opportunity to become better at what we do as well as gain knowledge on new pedagogical techniques, learning theories, leadership strategies, technologies, and federal/state mandates. They want the freedom to chart their own learning course while receiving support from the organization to do so. Is this a wise use of our time?
Imagine a network of leaders from every sector of education: public schools and early learning centers, colleges and universities, museums and libraries, nonprofits and corporations. Think of it this way — Some students learn by seeing. Others learn by hearing. Others learn by doing. But no one learns one way. So, when you have many ways of teaching material, nearly every student learns better. If project based learning works – do it. So, if differentiation works – do it.
The traditional forms of sit-and-get PD are giving way to MOOCs, webinars, Edcamps and flipped learning. Leading into this Saturday, I had an opportunity to spend most of Friday in the halls of New Milford with students and staff observing the climate and learning throughout the day.

On one day in August before the students came, and again in January of this year we set up Edcamp style PD days. She is someone that sees the value technology can add to the classroom and looks for ways to enhance learning in many different ways. We both spend a lot of time with teachers and learn what their needs are.
