For the better part of my educational career, I always referred to any type of learning to assist me as a teacher or administrator as professional development (PD). In March of 2009, I began to use Twitter, and it was at this time that I began to create a PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN).
For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.
Imagine a network of leaders from every sector of education: public schools and early learning centers, colleges and universities, museums and libraries, nonprofits and corporations. It’s the Remake LearningNetwork , a professional network of educators and innovators working together to shape the future of learning.
It is an opportunity to become better at what we do as well as gain knowledge on new pedagogical techniques, learning theories, leadership strategies, technologies, and federal/state mandates. They want the freedom to chart their own learning course while receiving support from the organization to do so. Is this a wise use of our time?
Edcamps are the "unconference". They are free, attendee led and driven, places to share and learn. Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. This is a great opportunity to connect, share, teach, learn, and expand their personallearningnetwork. Follow me on Twitter and Google+.

The traditional forms of sit-and-get PD are giving way to MOOCs, webinars, Edcamps and flipped learning. The idea of the flipped faculty meeting means the time normally spent on the boring stuff can be turned into a time to share, learn and grow, together, as a faculty. Technology has been a key component in the planting, fertilization, growth and eventually, the blossoming of new statewide initiatives including distance education and new professional learning opportunities for educators that have benefitted students in a variety of ways. I’ve got some experience with this from the past eight years.

Whether you are attending a conference like ISTE , or creating your own personalizedlearning experience, utilizing this “break” to explore new tools and strategies that help expand your teaching toolbox can be very rewarding.

Mandating that teachers attend a specific training, and never surveying them to ask what they need, or what they would like to learn. Why is it that we constantly stress the need to differentiate learning for our students, but bundle all teachers into the same learning environment. So how do you do that?
The “growth mindset” is the openness to learning about the medium, but the idea of the “innovator’s mindset” leads to people creating hashtags to share things that are happening in their classroom, or using it to connect with educators that teach the same discipline as they do. For those reasons Twitter will never connect all educators.
