Digital Promise is incredibly excited to welcome the Edcamp Foundation to our family of projects and programs. By fully merging our operations, we believe we can do even more to support the community of educators who organize and attend Edcamps across the United States and around the world.
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like? My experience with Edcamp has been that of a participant and an organizer (EdcampNC!). And seeing it from all sides really helps me believe that Edcamp, is quite possibly the best Professional Development I''ve had.
For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.
Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences for educators across the country and worldwide! I would say the key difference between an Edcamp and a typical educational conference is that they are unstructured and the sessions are based on sharing expertise. Have you been to an Edcamp? The format of MEMs can vary and depend on the needs of your group. Edcamps are free, public, professional development opportunities organized by educators, for educators. Edcamps are “un-conferences,” unstructured conferences that leverage the knowledge and experiences of the attendees to drive topics and discussions.
The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. Between now and May, 10 local PBS affiliates will host a series of specially branded events, called PBS Edcamps, aimed at educators and caregivers of students in Pre-K through third grade.

Edcamps —participatory, teacher-driven professional learning events — are multiplying on a national and international scale, creating local and global communities of passionate educators. The first Edcamp was organized by a group of teachers who came together in Philadelphia in May 2010 for BarCamp, a computer science unconference.
The session where this participatory type learning really benefited the attendees was the session about Edcamps. Kristen Swanson (an Edcamp Founder) designed a session that gave the Edcamp experience. We circled up chairs, suggested topics and then moved around the room so we could see what an Edcamp was like.

At the end of June a group of passionate, dedicated educators gathered for one of New Jersey’s last EdCamps of the 2017 school year. I went from predominantly whole-group, teacher-led lectures to a more student-centered, personalized way of working with kids. The conversation was underway when I walked in.

Gerald: An activity that I like to do is to give kids a box of stuff – maybe some random objects or maybe just some selected things I’ve specifically chosen, and ask them, “Okay, work together with your group, pick two objects out of the box, and then create a math problem that uses those objects.”. That gets them talking to each other.
Meanwhile, the most enthusiastic listeners whisper to each other, or form mini-groups outside the conference walls, maybe even at a social gathering later that day. Year five of Edcamp GigCity is in the books. Sure am thankful for a wonderful group of fellow educators. What many people probably don't know is that this is all volunteer led and run, and Edcamp Gigcity is unique in that the organizers represent higher ed, lower ed, public, and private school sectors. pun intended).
In all the work I have done with countless educators from across the world I believe we can break them down into two groups. Good Teachers and Great Teachers. What separates the two is effectiveness. Effective Educators are those that have a set of truths that they live by. It's what they wake up everyday thinking about and striving for.
Then in the morning I went back and asked if I could lead a small group to talk about formative assessments and how we could use the clickers for that. Edcamps too, while not brand new, have offered teachers and other educational professionals the opportunity to craft PD that is meaningful to them and really take back their own learning.

The EdCamp Foundation announced the gift of a $2 million dollar, no strings attached, Bill and Melinda Gates grant. It was especially exciting for me because I was there at the birth of the powerful (now international) movement at EdCamp Philly 2010. The little video above is a blast from that past.
Collaboration is one of the most valued features of meeting with other teachers, and projects such as EdCamp have demonstrated how successful this informal style of unconference can be in inspiring and enabling teachers. Meeting and working in small groups can achieve a great deal between teachers.
