Digital Promise is incredibly excited to welcome the Edcamp Foundation to our family of projects and programs. By fully merging our operations, we believe we can do even more to support the community of educators who organize and attend Edcamps across the United States and around the world.
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending another Edcamp. Don''t know what an Edcamp is or looks like? My experience with Edcamp has been that of a participant and an organizer (EdcampNC!). And seeing it from all sides really helps me believe that Edcamp, is quite possibly the best Professional Development I''ve had.
Educators are a resourceful bunch. Understandably, many educators are leaving the classroom for less stressful work environments. Others are holding it together, more determined than ever to address the systemic changes needed to improve the education system, meet the needs of learners, and maintain the quality of their profession.
For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.

As the maker movement continues to expand, more and more educators are asking these questions. One way to address them is by creating opportunities and spaces for educators to come together and share the work they are doing with their students. The format of MEMs can vary and depend on the needs of your group.
The do-it-yourself conference is coming to your local public broadcaster, as part of a new venture between the Edcamp Foundation and PBS Education. Between now and May, 10 local PBS affiliates will host a series of specially branded events, called PBS Edcamps, aimed at educators and caregivers of students in Pre-K through third grade.

The first Edcamp was organized by a group of teachers who came together in Philadelphia in May 2010 for BarCamp, a computer science unconference.

Kristen Swanson (an Edcamp Founder) designed a session that gave the Edcamp experience. We circled up chairs, suggested topics and then moved around the room so we could see what an Edcamp was like.
In all the work I have done with countless educators from across the world I believe we can break them down into two groups. Effective Educators are those that have a set of truths that they live by. They know they have limits yet are constantly seeking minute improvements to continue growing themselves as an educator.
For those who don''t know, Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees. At the end of June a group of passionate, dedicated educators gathered for one of New Jersey’s last EdCamps of the 2017 school year. I went from predominantly whole-group, teacher-led lectures to a more student-centered, personalized way of working with kids. The conversation was underway when I walked in.
