Through socialmedia a Personal Learning Network (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse. While online consider making some time to learn and then apply a new skill while earning a digitalbadge to acknowledge your informal learning. Carve out some time each day if possible. Part of the December 2019 STEM Resources Digital Calendar ! I started this blog 10 years ago, which was shortly after using Twitter and other socialmedia tools to connect with educators. Below I’ve listed free design tools teachers and students can use to create digital graphics and publications.
Digital Promise worked with Facebook to create a set of micro-credentials (a form of digitalbadges) focused on helping adults in the workforce learn these “middle” skills in the area of digital marketing. Those organizations include SouthWest Solutions, BUILD Institute, SistersCode and ACCESS. Marketing with Instagram.
For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. Through the use of socialmedia, I realized that I didn’t really need to be “developed.”
Last fall, in an effort to address this gap, Facebook pledged to train 3,000 Michiganders in digital skills by 2020 through the Digital Skills Micro-credential program created in partnership with Digital Promise. To date, these organizations have trained more than 500 people across the state.
We have also had the honor of co-presenting workshops across the United States. In addition to the digitalbadge awarded at the end of the course, once all requirements have been met we can also send a signed certificate of completion. The reaction to Learning Transformed has been truly humbling.
During the edWebinar “ DigitalBadge Credentials: Preparing Students with Special Needs for Employment,” the presenters discussed how and why digitalbadges can help students validate their training and verify their credentials with prospective employers. Many times, though, the problem is also a communication gap.
As a result, educators must learn on the job, by reading articles, attending workshops (if they are offered and able) and speaking to others face-to-face and online. However, while educators who have these skills will be more effective at supporting student learning, a teacher’s preservice program may not have fully addressed this.

The end result is creating an environment that empowers students to use the tools they possess as mobile learning devices to enhance learning, increase productivity, develop positive digital footprints, and conduct better research.
