In 2017, we partnered with Facebook (now Meta) to design four training modules and micro-credentials in socialmedia marketing. Over the course of the partnership, Digital Promise collaborated with 39 organizations across the country to train 3,000 adult learners. The four modules are: Module 1: SocialMedia Marketing Basics.

Digital Promise worked with Facebook to create a set of micro-credentials (a form of digitalbadges) focused on helping adults in the workforce learn these “middle” skills in the area of digital marketing.
Due to socialmedia and the Internet all digital projects have a purpose and audience and usually some kind of message. Digitalbadge – students might also receive a digitalbadge for their completed projects. This criteria is also included in the rubric used to evaluate the creations.
Through the use of socialmedia, I realized that I didn’t really need to be “developed.” I think the same can be said when it comes to the learners we serve. In March of 2009, I began to use Twitter, and it was at this time that I began to create a Personal Learning Network (PLN).
Image credit: [link] The one thing I have learned though since I began my socialmedia journey almost six years ago is that we no longer follow a predetermined path. Socialmedia really did open up a door to a whole new world that I never knew existed. You might very well see a link to socialmedia as I have.
As socialmedia embracement was not even a blip on the radar at this time, these teacher leaders were quite skeptical about the alleged benefits I described. I remember a few years back during a meeting with teacher leaders, a tipping point that would ultimately change the direction of professional growth at my school.
Here is a short list of some of the changes that have been implemented and sustained: Socialmedia use as a communications, public relations, branding, professional growth, and student learning tool implemented in 2009. Online courses through the Virtual High School implemented in 2010. Makerspace added to the library in 2013.
As students develop their skills, they can earn digital micro-credentials as a way to demonstrate the competencies they have built. They can post these micro-credentials on their resumes, LinkedIn profiles, or other socialmedia platforms for future employers to see.
In addition to the digitalbadge awarded at the end of the course, once all requirements have been met we can also send a signed certificate of completion. Consult with your local school or district as to how this course can be used to satisfy continuing education and professional learning hour requirements.
To address these different learning levels, RIFLI uses the Northstar Digital Literacy assessment exam as the basis for a curriculum that teaches how to use a computer to using Microsoft Excel and Word as well as socialmedia, specifically Facebook. At the end of each course, RIFLI staff award digitalbadges to the students.

Additionally, micro-credentials create a platform for Mr. Smith to share his new skills through portable digitalbadges. By sharing this badge with his peers, leadership, and others, Mr. Smith will become a potential resource for other educators confronting similar challenges. And so goes on the journey of continuous learning.
Specifically, educators can pursue micro-credentials, sharable as digitalbadges, to gain recognition for competencies they demonstrate throughout their careers, regardless of where it happens. While this affords learners unprecedented freedom, it also can make it difficult to effectively recognize that learning.
Just look at Apple’s partnership with numerous community colleges to integrate its app development tools and frameworks into curriculum, or Facebook’s plan to teach their socialmedia products based on topics like generating leads on socialmedia platforms, monetizing content, and increasing online sales.
If you successfully demonstrate competence, you will receive the micro-credential in the form of a digitalbadge. Perhaps one of the most critical areas in today’s education landscape, and an area where Digital Promise micro-credentials are making an immediate impact, is supporting English learners.
Communication, collaboration, creativity, media literacy, global connectedness, problem solving, and critical thinking are vital to success. Digital tools now allow for professional learning to take place anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. Digitalbadges are an exciting way to acknowledge both formal and informal learning.
