Noah Geisel, @SenorG , is the first person who really taught me about the potential micro-credentials and digitalbadges have to motivate learners to achieve great things throughout their lives. I had used badges for my onlinelearning conferences, but hadn’t quite used badges with students, yet.
In our latest publication, Micro-credentials for Social Mobility in Rural Postsecondary Communities: A Landscape Report , Digital Promise conducted four in-depth case studies to explore how postsecondary institutions are using micro-credentials to create real-time career pathways for rural learners.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of thousands of K-12 and college students have transitioned to onlinelearning. Because onlinelearning cannot easily foster the social and emotional connections that in-person learning does, students have a more difficult time staying motivated in classes.

It is still early in the adoption of these digital hiring practices—and how employers deploy them is still very much a “black box.” As those hiring methods go digital, they could speed adoption of new kinds of microcredentials and digitalbadges designed to show employers the fine-grained skills achieved during educational programs.
