While high-resolution data for community colleges isn’t available, we can see evidence for this in proxies such as Google search trends , consumers’ growing openness and intention to study online , booming MOOC enrollment , and publicly-traded online learning company enrollment results. That presents both an opportunity and a challenge.
Digitalbadges. Three types of edtech joined the “filmstrip” category in this decade: Learning Management Systems , MOOC s, and digitalbadges. They are a perfect example of what you get when you simply transfer analog practice to digital form and don’t make use of the advantages of the new medium.
It is still early in the adoption of these digital hiring practices—and how employers deploy them is still very much a “black box.” As those hiring methods go digital, they could speed adoption of new kinds of microcredentials and digitalbadges designed to show employers the fine-grained skills achieved during educational programs.

But to train this workforce effectively, we’ll need to change the way we approach education. In the past, we’ve often thought about formal education as the acquisition of broad skills at a fixed point in time, with training ending at about age 18, 22 or later for those who need advanced degrees.

Just as formal education systems made a dramatic shift to digital since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, on-the-job training is changing as well. The same forces that transformed classrooms have accelerated the adoption of more digital learning in workplace training—advancing a trend that was already underway.
I’ve tried to train myself in the lingo and include terms like “design sprint,” “customer,” “ROI” and so on in my vocabulary. I’ve done design sprints with people high up the org chart. I’ve read books like The Innovator’s Dilemma and others that you’d not typically find in the math section of the bookstore.
