Noah Geisel, @SenorG , is the first person who really taught me about the potential micro-credentials and digitalbadges have to motivate learners to achieve great things throughout their lives. I had used badges for my online learning conferences, but hadn’t quite used badges with students, yet.

Each module has an aligned micro-credential that learners can earn to verify their skills and signal to employers that they possess these important digital skills. Once learners earn a micro-credential, they can display it as a digitalbadge on LinkedIn, Facebook, and their resume.
I remember a few years back during a meeting with teacher leaders, a tipping point that would ultimately change the direction of professional growth at my school. During this conversation I was passionately sharing my experiences as a connected learner.
KQED (the issuing organization) then reviews the evidence and determines whether it meets the requirements of the scoring guide and rubric for that particular skill. If it does, then the educator receives the micro-credential in the form of a digitalbadge that’s linked to the submitted evidence.
The alternative to four-year degrees comes in the form of digital credentials. Students who have mastered a competency can earn a digitalbadge to showcase that. Two weeks ago, I attended the DigitalBadge Summit in Denver, CO. I’ve been somewhat hesitant to jump into digitalbadges world (despite knowing the digitalbadge ninja, @senorg) because I feared that digitalbadges were just one more way to categorize and label kids, another carrot to dangle in the classroom.
