I, of course, start off again by modeling — what does a SketchNote — or what could a SketchNote — look like? Expose students to various tools for taking notes — visual or other. Leah: Well, I really, really like to get my students to sketch out their ideas. So we use the Paper 53 app on our iPads.
Vicki: And of course, if Ernest Hemingway can do it, we can do it too, right? So that’s a very fun one that takes the focus off of the writing, but reminds them of what they’re supposed to do with writing. They’re still writing, because it’s Twitter. But it’s not a lot. And they love Twitter! Jacqui: (laughs) Yes, exactly!
Pam: But his kids… he teaches an environmental course. I think somebody told me he was actually involved in a brewery before he became a teacher… Vicki: (laughs). Pam: … which I think is probably not a bad thing. Student Bee Keepers. His kids and he, they decided that they wanted to put in beehives.

Now we have of course the ESSA Act here in the US that lets states have different measures. Schools were never designed to do that, so we basically have this massive paradigm shift that we’ve got to figure out how to go through. Right now, we’re in that transition period. Vicki: We are. So we’re talking about wanting to scale creativity.
