Now, a new report suggests that teacher preparation programs underemphasize math instruction at the elementary school level. But many elementary school teachers are uncomfortable with math in a way that can pass on to students. The report gave Fs to 84 percent of the graduate programs preparing elementary school teachers for math.
It is not clear to me why elementary students are rarely offered elective courses. In fact, several studies show that students are more likely to get a degree or major in a course they took as an elective. I never understood why elementary students aren’t shown the bigger picture of a lesson, unit, or course.
