For years, organizers of “ Edcamps ,” a popular brand of informal professional development gatherings for teachers, received a resource kit sent by their host organization, the Edcamp Foundation. Last week, Digital Promise announced it had acquired the assets and operations of the Edcamp Foundation. It began with a box.
For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. In March of 2009, I began to use Twitter, and it was at this time that I began to create a PersonalLearning Network (PLN).
Edcamps are the "unconference". They are free, attendee led and driven, places to share and learn. Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. This is a great opportunity to connect, share, teach, learn, and expand their personallearning network. Follow me on Twitter and Google+.
Coming back from GAETC 2015, I realized that I had been to the conference before but my classroom was unchanged. I would keep a list of the next three things I wanted to learn. Books, Videos, Courses, and Conferences. At Edcamps across the world, teachers show up on a Saturday morning to an unconference location.
And although they’re an impressive group, representing over 250 organizations, they’re doing what you should be doing: forming a PersonalLearning Network (PLN) that benefits both themselves and the wider education community. Meetups are a great, informal way to share and learn ideas from new people face-to-face. No problem.

Although Nebraska has wide open spaces, we value getting together on a Saturday for an EdCamp, which have taken place all over the state in Omaha, Kearney, Grand Island, and Columbus.

From local Edcamps in your backyard to glitzy conferences dotting the globe, these convenings showcase exciting changes happening in schools and classrooms (and humbling lessons learned along the way).
Many schools and districts are trying to do the right thing by meeting the needs of as many educators as possible when it comes to professional learning.
