Difficult decisions have had to be made regarding grading, making funds available to get technology in the hands of disadvantaged kids, getting school work to kids where the digital divide could not be overcome, and figuring out how to provide professional learning support virtually. The typical edtech conference buzzes with gadgetry, infrastructure and new ways to engage students. But when was the last time you hear someone talk about racism or digital equity? We are both tech-centric educators who attend many conferences each year. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that—the world needs both.

Regardless of the conference you attend, what you do afterwards is what truly matters. This is something that I see happening at every Model Schools Conference.

While attending the NSBA Annual Conference this past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Sal Kahn’s keynote on Sunday. Khan is the creator of Khan Academy. He began his keynote by sharing a video montage of Khan Academy highlights and then presenting some impressive statistics on usage. And they do.
