I recently had the honor of traveling to the MIT campus in Boston and participating in a panel discussion on Open Education Resources (OER) at The Sixth Conference of MIT''s Learning International Networks Consortium (LINC) with three illustrious advocates of these open resources: Nicole Allen, Philipp Schmidt, and panel moderator Steve Carson.
Several conversations lately have made me ponder the importance of community understanding and support for various new initiatives like open learning and OER adoption. In particular, I was at a meeting with the mayor and city manager of a local community last week. This relates to OER as well.
To meet current math standards like the Louisiana Student Standards for Mathematics or the CommonCore State Standards, it is no longer enough for students to simply memorize how to do something. Choosing an OER turned out to be a great way to garner teacher buy-in, which is essential to the success of any instructional program.
Open resources can help design attractive, engaging lessons with a CommonCore twist. In 2010, my state, Mississippi, joined the growing list of states adopting the CommonCore State Standards for English language arts and math. Next page: OER in action.
