It is a shame that the growth of leaders, and all educators for that matter, is a trivial concern to districts and so called reformers, unless it is solely related to the Common Core, PARCC, SGO’s (in NJ at least), or a teacher/principal evaluation tool. Now more than ever leaders need to take control of their learning.

Educators now have to attend mandate-driven workshops on the Common Core, teacher/principal evaluation, and student growth objectives. Now, I am not saying that these things are not important, but it is hard as a professional to develop a love for learning when one has to succumb to daylong trainings with absolutely no authenticity.

Undeterred, I continued to talk about the concept of a Personal Learning Network (PLN) and what it had done for my professional growth. Think of it as a differentiated learning opportunity that caters to each of my staff member’s specific needs and interests.
