Adding more depth to the PGP process and portfolio has been the digital badge platform created by media specialist Laura Fleming to acknowledge the informal learning of our teachers. The end result has been a proliferation of innovative practices as teachers have been empowered to take ownership of their learning through autonomy.

Even in the face of adversity in the form of education reform mandates, Common Core alignment, impending PARCC exams, new educator evaluation systems, loss of funding, and an aging infrastructure we have not only persevered, but proven that positive change can happen with the right mindset. Makerspace added to the library in 2013.

There is a great deal of talk these days about micro-credentials and digital badging as a means to acknowledge professional learning of educators. Check out what Mozilla has created with their Open Badges platform. Educators can earn the badge by then assimilating what they’ve learned into their own instruction in some way.

Once teachers have selected what learning and what digital badges (individual or category badges; see previous blog ), the teachers encounter another decision. What will they name each badge? Will they use the full name of the Common Core Standard or the national proficiency?

The idea of digital badges sounds appealing for the digital children in classes. As teachers start thinking about digital badges, they have to figure out what badges will be awarded. The teachers can award social or academic badges.

The final grade in a course or even a ten week grade probably does not reflect the actual academic learning.These grades may not reflect the academic standards (Common Core, standards or proficiencies) for that course. Badges allow teachers to focus specifically on student standards or proficiencies.
