This week my spring 2022 seminar began. These seminars are mostly discussion based. As the seminar progresses, they will use technologies they study to create these reflections. These last parts stem from my classroom democracy belief, as does our opening class assignment of collaboratively determining class norms.
A Socratic seminar calls on ALL the big executive skills. Many teachers are intrigued by the Socratic method but worry "it won't work with my students." Patricia Cook and Susanne Croasdaile found that we don’t need to wait until they’re all "ready" – we can just dive in!
Translate this thought into the classroom. history class, a cluster of teenagers participate in a Socratic seminar in a corner of the room, using a provided template as they explore whether citizens have a right to dissolve their government. It helps me to modify to the learners in front of me immediately. In the U.S.
No one knows yet what the next semester will bring, but there’s a good chance the spaces where you used to teach, whether cavernous lecture hall or cozy seminar room, won’t be available this fall.
