There is nothing more important to an educator, outside of working with kids, than professional learning. Through social media a PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse. You can now learn anywhere, with anyone, at anytime you want for free. Image credit: [link].
“We now live in a world where even twelve-year olds can create their own global classrooms around the things about which they are are most passionate,” writes Will Richardson in an essay entitled “Navigating Social Networks as Learning Tools.” In other words, they need adults who are “network literate.”
I cannot begin to explain all of the battles with students and parents that my administrative team and I had to deal with because of the established policy. As a principal, it took me a while to accept the fact that these small, but powerful computing devices could play an important role in the classroom.
Today’s classrooms have more devices, more educational software, more opportunities to differentiate learning based on various student needs, and educators are under more pressure to do more, preferably as fast as possible, with excellent results. Each student learns differently. Embrace variety. Teachers know that.
The content they shared included policies, procedures, pedagogical techniques, and professional development, but more importantly, tangible improvement results. Motivated and inspired I then began to seek out research and more examples of successful implementation that aligned with our goals while addressing specific challenges.
Don''t get me wrong, the summer months are invaluable to me as I spend my time immersed in the flow of information that my social networks provide, developing action plans, analyzing data, and hiring staff. Many of the initiatives that I am about to pursue either came directly or indirectly from my PersonalLearningNetwork (PLN).
