Like many, this teacher felt intense pressure to teach the standards and wasn’t sure how to embrace Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and blended learning. This is where the combination of UDL and blended learning has the potential to be so powerful. This is not unusual.
I like to compare the teacher’s work designing learning experiences to the work of an architect. Too many students spend their days in classrooms passively observing, instead of actively engaging. As a result, they are not developing their metacognitive, critical thinking, and self-regulatory skills; all of which are critical to success both in the classroom and beyond. As schools were compelled to implement distance learning during this year’s pandemic, it became clear that emergency remote learning widened many gaps that already existed within the walls of brick and mortar schools. There are several reasons it’s critical to consider balance when designing learning experiences. The person doing the work in a classroom is the person doing the learning. So, students should do the heavy cognitive lift of making meaning and applying their learning.
Blended learning is the thoughtful design and facilitation of learning experiences that strive to shift control from teacher to learner by weaving together active, engaged learningonline and offline. It can combine both in-class and onlinelearning at home with the flipped classroom and playlist models.
Teachers got a crash course in creating video content when schools shifted online. They relied on videos out of necessity to explain concepts and model strategies while students learned from home. As teachers transitioned back into classrooms, many abandoned video in favor of live instruction.
The variety of humans in a classroom is remarkable. Universally designing blended learning presents educators with the opportunity to transition from designing a single experience that is teacher-paced and teacher-led to a more flexible experience that gives the students more control over the pace and path.
