Digital Promise is incredibly excited to welcome the Edcamp Foundation to our family of projects and programs. By fully merging our operations, we believe we can do even more to support the community of educators who organize and attend Edcamps across the United States and around the world.

But these conferences are not like an edcamp or an unstructured unconference of the kind you may have heard of. And how can we celebrate the educators who continue to share their practices and collaborate with others to grow and improve classrooms nationwide?
I had heard about Breakout EDU back in 2015 when it first hit the EdCamp scene in New Jersey. Read Across America Day presented the perfect time to try it a shot. I loved the idea of a team of people working together to uncover clues and solve puzzles to meet a common goal of unlocking the box to win a prize. PBJ paralysis perhaps?
An innovative professional development model comes to the classroom. Edcamp “unconferences” have shattered the traditional model for professional development, and they’re catching on as a way for educators to share their ideas and expertise in an informal, collegial way.
For anyone who has seen me do a presentation at a conference, you may know that I also participate in the conference as well. When I was a full-time classroom teacher, I took advantage of the opportunity to learn from and listen to others. Later that night, I started to think about the workshops I’d like to attend the next day.

I have to admit, that I’ve avoided edcamps and unconfernces for a while, because they have felt to me like group hugs… warm and cozy, but not a lot about moving my learning forward. Our present education system is built around always finding the ‘right’ answer, but when can the wrong answer be valuable?
We want teachers actively engaged in solving the problems they face in the classroom. Our LMS platforms, like Google Classroom , would be perfect for this. Create a class in Google Classroom for each group. Don’t be afraid to combine live and recorded presentations. Incorporate active learning opportunities.
Edcamps and TeachMeets are another example of how this can happen. I kept hearing and asking myself why can''t this style of presentation (The Conversation) be replicated at things like ISTE or other major conferences or even at the local level? A question that haunts me however, at almost any education conference that I attend is: Why are so many (not all) of these educators, who are so skilled in a classroom of kids, so bad at teaching in a room full of adults for professional development?
