Below are some lessons we learned after hitting the reset button on our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative in order to get it right that I captured in a 2015 post. If the expectation was to integrate technology with purpose to support or enhance learning, we made sure everyone was prepared to do just that.
Leaders must begin to establish a vision and strategic plan to create classrooms and buildings that are more reflective of the real world while empowering learners to use technology in powerful ways through either personalized or blended strategies and increased access in the form of BYOD or 1:1. This needs to be prioritized.
Our youngest learners will need some help and guidance, especially if their elementary schools have not been 1:1 or Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). From there, districts and schools can begin to put in place professionallearning plans that transform practices in the classroom that can be used for remote learning if the need arises.
Practices such as BYOD, 1:1, blended learning, personalized learning, classroom and school redesign, branding, makerspaces, professionallearning, etc. The DPA creates the context for our work with leaders and teachers, providing authentic baseline data to support personalized professionallearning.

Why should professionallearning be a part of every technology initiative? Because of equity, said the three leading superintendents on the edLeader Panel, “ Creating and Leading a Professional Team of Lifelong Learners.” Professionallearning should be grounded in the needs of the students.

To increase access give some thought to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative if there is not enough funding to go 1:1. Ensure ongoing professional development – I cannot overstate the importance of this suggestion enough. Professional development should be ongoing and embedded throughout the school year.
They should help students connect with experts that can help them learn. In effect, teachers should help students create their own ProfessionalLearning Networks (PLNs). Then, they should help students care for and grow that network according to their learning needs.
