A micro-credential is a competency-based digitalbadge teachers can earn. The interview as presented has been condensed. How would you describe a micro-credential to a teacher who has never heard of one before? Micro-credentialing allows teachers to learn complex skills, then demonstrate effectiveness.
Digitalbadges do just that: they show when students have learned a skill or met a goal. For teachers, badges make classroom goals visible to students. The value of digitalbadges goes beyond the classroom, as well. Students use badges that they have earned to get scholarships, enter graduate school, and get jobs.

Although competency-based learning and assessment has a long history, a workable technical solution to support this system — digitalbadges — is relatively new.

Specifically, educators can pursue micro-credentials, sharable as digitalbadges, to gain recognition for competencies they demonstrate throughout their careers, regardless of where it happens. While this affords learners unprecedented freedom, it also can make it difficult to effectively recognize that learning.

Two weeks ago, I attended the DigitalBadge Summit in Denver, CO. I’ve been somewhat hesitant to jump into digitalbadges world (despite knowing the digitalbadge ninja, @senorg) because I feared that digitalbadges were just one more way to categorize and label kids, another carrot to dangle in the classroom.
