I like to compare the teacher’s work designing learning experiences to the work of an architect. The irony is that the very thing many teachers fear (lack of control) may be the very thing that motivates students to learn into the learning happening in the classroom.

Reading Support: Provide additional reading support, such as guided reading sessions, to help improve comprehension and develop their active reading strategies.

As I was on-sight with them in a socially distanced cafeteria, I facilitated a more traditional workshop. After focusing on practical pedagogy, we ended with some ideas on transitioning to more personalized approaches through blendedlearning. The feedback afterward presented validation for how I structured the workshop.

For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. A dynamic mash-up of workshops and coaching definitely falls into the sweet spot.

This situation reflects the limitation of a models-approach to blendedlearning implementation. While models have been pivotal in helping teachers implement blended practice, a hyper focus on their individual components, or one model over another, can obscure the big picture. In short, we need to go back to the basics.

We teach beautifully diverse groups of students with various skill levels, needs, language proficiencies, and learning preferences. I remember facilitating workshops on blendedlearning models and universally designed learning to provide students with flexible pathways.

Until this point, most of my interactions with educators have been through virtual presentations, workshops, and coaching. Now don't get me wrong as this has been incredibly fulfilling and a great learning experience for me. However, you just can't replace face-to-face professional learning, in my opinion.
I have been blessed to not only deliver keynotes and workshops but also to facilitate job-embedded coaching on a long-term basis. Or if you are committed to blendedlearning , then a combination of pedagogical change as well as updated spaces is needed. Context matters. Finances matter. Facilities matter.
