In my role as a blended learning coach, I work with a lot of teachers who are intrigued by the idea of digital notebooks. A simple alternative to creating a digital notebook using a website creator is to use Google Slides to create digital notebooks for each unit. Create a new Google Slide deck in your Google Drive.

In the early days of my transition to blended learning, I had one Chromebook, which I received after writing a Donor’s Choose project. It is a series of stations, or learning activities, that students rotate through. To be considered a blended learning model, at least one station must be an online learning station.

The Station Rotation Model is a blended learning model where students rotate through a series of online and offline stations. This model is an easier shift for elementary teachers who are already use learning stations with students. That said, there are clear advantages to using this model at the secondary level.

In my most recent book, Balance with Blended Learning , I have a chapter dedicated to providing real-time feedback as students work. It’s exciting to see so many teachers trying this blended learning model and creating opportunities for small group instruction, real-time feedback, collaboration, and differentiated learning. This goes for secondary students too! 1) Use your teacher-led station for a range of activities beyond direct instruction.
