Today, virtual trainer and Class Tech Tips guru Monica Burns talks about what we need to be learning over the summer so we can be healthier and more successful in the fall no matter what we face.
In my last blog, I focused on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principle of engagement. I highlighted how blendedlearning can help educators more effectively provide multiple means of engagement to increase student motivation and ensure all students can successfully engage with learning experiences.
Given that many teachers are working with students online, at least part-time, I created the Google Slide decks below for teachers to copy and use in an onlinelearning scenario. That way, students can learn with and from each other. The image of each Google slide deck is hyperlinked to a sharable version.
When I train coaches supporting teachers in the shift to blendedlearning, I share my blendedlearning coaching cycle, which I wrote about in Power Up BlendedLearning. It is essential to “think big and start small” when onboarding a teacher to a new blendedlearning model.
My doctoral research focused on the multidimensional motivational construct of teacher engagement in blendedlearning environments. I encourage teachers to create a Google sheet or Microsoft Excel sheet to track student progress. Need more support getting started with blendedlearning or onlinelearning?
As the year comes to a close, I encourage teachers to take a moment and collect feedback from students about their experiences learningonline in the last few months. Teachers are scrambling to move their offline courses online to ensure that students continue learning for the remainder of the school year. Understandably, the focus is on onlinelearning as that is a new and unfamiliar learning landscape for a lot of educators.
This epiphany brought me to the blendedlearning movement. Transforming my classroom into a blendedlearning environment. I was awarded this new technology and started to rewrite my curriculum for onlinelearning. I tried several web-based learning management systems including Google Classroom and Schoology.
Perhaps the most concerning survey result is that more than half of teachers (57 percent) say they do not feel prepared to facilitate remote and onlinelearning. In the early days of my transition to blendedlearning, I had one Chromebook, which I received after writing a Donor’s Choose project. But the reality is also that we’re going to have to prepare for a fall that – whatever it looks like – will include an onlinelearning component. As much as I like the chat and basic polling features in video conferencing platforms, like Zoom and Google Meet, I wanted something more dynamic. I began our session by asking participants to tell me the first three words that came to mind when they heard the phrase “blendedlearning.”
