When I train coaches supporting teachers in the shift to blendedlearning, I share my blendedlearning coaching cycle, which I wrote about in Power Up BlendedLearning. It is essential to “think big and start small” when onboarding a teacher to a new blendedlearning model.

In the early days of my transition to blendedlearning, I had one Chromebook, which I received after writing a Donor’s Choose project. It is a series of stations, or learning activities, that students rotate through. To be considered a blendedlearning model, at least one station must be an online learning station.
Not only are audio and video instructions an excellent complement to text directions, but they can make students feel more connected to their teachers as they learn online. Below are two strategies that teachers using Google Classroom can use to add audio and video instructions to assignments!
As an advocate of blendedlearning, I want teachers to strive for a healthy balance of online and offline tasks as students engage in distance learning. I can honestly say that I have learned so much from them over the years as to what pedagogically-sound blendedlearning really is, and, in my mind, they are a global exemplar for others to emulate.

Choice Boards Giving kids a choice as to the activities they engage in is a great way to empower them to learn while providing greater ownership. Choice boards represent a solid blendedlearning strategy where tasks can be scaffolded, differentiated, and contain a mix of digital and non-digital options.
As the year comes to a close, I encourage teachers to take a moment and collect feedback from students about their experiences learning online in the last few months. I think it’s likely that schools will begin the year online or adopt a blendedlearning model that allows for fewer students on campus at one time.
