For the last 10 years, I’ve been using blended learning models and technology to shift control in the classroom from me to my students. If teachers and students work together to assess, track, and reflect on the learning happening in the classroom, teachers will have the time and energy to innovate and personalize learning.

The other day I was conducting some learning walks with the administrative team at Wells Elementary School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD). Throughout the school year, I have been assisting them with digital pedagogy as it relates to blended learning and the use of flex spaces.

In the early days of my transition to blended learning, I had one Chromebook, which I received after writing a Donor’s Choose project. It is a series of stations, or learning activities, that students rotate through. To be considered a blended learning model, at least one station must be an online learning station.

Student agency, or a students’ ability to make key decisions about their learning experience, is an essential aspect of blended learning. Choice boards fall within the umbrella of blended learning when we combine active, engaged learning online with active, engaged learning offline.
